PSHS CALABARZON HOLDS TULONG DUNONG 2019

The annual Tulong Dunong themed PISAY KAAGAPAY (KAbataang may Angking Galing Alagaan at PAYabungin) is an outreach activity that aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of Grade 6 students in the fields of English, Math, Science, and Abstract Reasoning and to reinforce the critical skills in content and pedagogy of grade six teachers in CALABARZON. The event materialized through the support of the Department of Education Division of Batangas City headed by Dr. Donato G. Bueno, the efforts of the Senior Education Program Specialist on Human Resource Development Mrs. Nida C. Santos, and the aid of the City Government of Batangas led by Mayor Beverley Dimacuha. This undertaking also eyes an increase in the number of public school students to pass the National Competitive Examination.

The two-day learning camp was held on October 5 and October 12, 2019 at Philippine Science High School CALABARZON Region Campus. 111 out of the anticipated 150 student participants attended the plenary and the parallel sessions while from the anticipated 90 teacher participants 98 attended the sessions.

On October 5, as organized by the committee spearheaded by Ms. Sarha Bautista and Mr. Ferdinand Paunil along with other committee members and teacher volunteers, an opening program hosted by Mr. Reynier Olivares signaled the start of the learning camp. Immediately after, a plenary session for the teacher participants on “Design Thinking in Education” was conducted by the lecturers, Mr. Joni Albarico and Mr. Dexter Laurden, while proctors facilitated the pre-tests among the students. In the afternoon, parallel sessions took place—Mr. Reynier Olivares lectured on Verbal Ability, Mr. Christopher Cordero for Quantitative Ability, Ms. Micah Elayda for Scientific Ability, and Mr. Jeff Abareta and Ms. Judy Ann Paunil for Abstract Reasoning while the teacher participants had Mr. John-Niel Masong for “Physics, Fun and Beyond”, Mr. Romeo Madrona for “How to Solve it?”, Mr. Moises Guerrero for Science, Ms. Alona Gatoc for “Exploring Surface, area and volume of Rectangular Prisms using Geogebra” and Ms. Abigail Ocampo for Intensive English.

During the last day of the camp, October 12, Ms. Nneka Evangelista joined the pool of lecturers and took over Abstract Reasoning, Ms. Michelle Manglicmot for Science, Mr. Karlo Cristobal for “Didactic Phenomena”, and Mr. John Vincent Forteza for English. A plenary session on “Transformative Innovations in Education” facilitated by Ms. Mary Angel Gavina took place while student participants were taking their post-tests.

The two-day event concluded with a socials activity and awarding of certificates to pre-test and post-test top scorers and student and teacher participants.
